NOTE : Although BMI is useful for creating guidelines for healthy adults (ages 18 to 65 years), it does not apply to infants, children, adolescents, pregnant or breastfeeding women and adults over 65 years of age.
It must also be remembered that overweight may or may not be due to increases in body fat. Some very muscular or very short individuals may be classified as obese, even when they are not. For example, professional athletes may be very lean and muscular, with very little body fat, yet they may weigh more than others their same height simply because of their larger muscle mass regardless of BMI. Similarly BMI is likely to overestimate fat in individuals less than 5 feet tall.

BMI is a valid measurement of weight in relation to health. However, it is not recommended for use as the sole measurement of either body composition or level of fitness.
